      Skin Rejuvenation > Microdermabrasion

What is microdermabrasion?

Microderabrasion , also called as Skin polishing, is a simple and safe office procedure that helps in abrading the superficial skin layer ( stratum corneum).

This superficial abrasion is done with the help of aluminum oxide crystals or other abrasive substances that are blown onto the skin surface and then vacuumed off, using a single handpiece.

Also diamond tipped microdermabrasion is available at DISHA where no crystals are required.

How does microdermabrasion work?

Once the stratum corneum is abraded, the skin's surface is improved. The healing process brings with it newer skin cells that look and feel smoother. Some of the skin's visible fine lines, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and to some extent, pigmentation due to tanning are removed.

How is the procedure performed?

After cleaning the face to remove the oil and debris, the patient is made to lie in a comfortable position. The suction probe is then moved over the area requiring rejuvenation. This causes a mild pull sensation on the skin but no other unpleasant sensation

After covering the entire area in a criss cross pattern, the area is cleaned to remove the skin debris and other collection. The patient is then asked to apply a sunscreen.

Are there any adverse effects with microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a safe and simple procedure and adverse effects are rarely encountered. It is however generally not performed in people who have extremely sensitive skin, uncontrolled diabetes, vascular conditions like rosacea, skin inflammation, bacterial infections, lack of tactile sensation, keloid scarring, cuts and abrasions, or have gotten Botox within 72 hours.

Other contraindications to microdermabrasion include sunburn, viral infections like herpes simplex, and active acne and patients on anticoangualnt drugs.

What is a dermaroller?

Dermaroller or Micro-needling of the skin is an increasingly common cosmetic procedure. The Dermaroller is a cylindrical shaped drum studded with very fine needles.

How does the Derma Roller Work?

As you roll the dermaroller over your skin, it creates pin point punctures into the dermis – the majority of which are simply pushing your pores to open temporarily. This is perceived by the body as damage, which stimulates the release of growth factors that trigger the production of collagen and elastin.

What effects does the Dermaroller have on the skin?

It improves the thickness of the dermis as well as the epidermis. This, in return, improves skin texture and reduces wrinkles. It also has a positive effect on hyper-pigmentation as well as on hypo-pigmentation. Reduces disfiguring scars & acne scars, stimulates new collagen fibres, improves blood supply and harmonises pigmentation.

How is the procedure performed & does it hurt?

The skin is cleaned and afterwards numbed with an appropriate topical anesthetic with only minimal discomfort. Skin is thoroughly needled in such a way that each skin part is needled about 15 to 20 times. An even flushing is the best indication of a thorough treatment.

Can it be performed on any skin colour?
Since Dermaroller does not use thermal heat (unlike IPL & Lasers) it is safe to use on all skin types and all skin colours. There is no risk of post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation.
How often can the Dermaroller procedure be repeated?
For Collagen Induction Therapy we recommend to start with 3 treatments, but with a minimum separation time of 6 to 8 weeks between treatments. For Scar Reduction Therapy an average of 3 to 5 treatments are recommended.
What are the side effects of a Dermaroller procedure?
So far there are no studies available on the efficacy and adverse effect profile of dermarollers.
