Intense Pulse Light Therapy (IPL)

What is the role of Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy in pigmentory disorders?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a high energy pulse of light that help in decreasing certain types of pigmentation. An IPL system has different filters that help in selecting a wavelength that can be more effective without damaging the surrounding tissue.

What pigmentary and vascular disorders can IPL treat?
  • Telangiectasias - spider or thread veins -on the face or body;
  • Port wine stains - (pink, deep red or purple patches on the skin which are present from birth);
  • Rosacea – a rash that looks similar to acne, but on a red background;
  • Spider Naevus - a single red spot with little "arms" coming out from it;
  • Lentigos - sometimes called age or liver spots. These are similar to freckles, but are usually larger and darker with irregular edges. They are usually associated with sun damage;
  • Solar Keratosis - bumpy or raised areas of the skin which are also scaly to look at and feel. These are usually found in older people and are associated with exposure to the sun;
  • freckles;
  • pigmented birthmarks;
  • warts;
  • stubborn and persistent warts
  • some larger or varicose veins;
  • some scars and stretch marks.
How is IPL used?

DISHA SKIN AND LASER INSTITUTE uses a highly evolved system of IPL called as Nannolight.

The main benefit of nannolight is the safety since it breaks down a single pulse of high energy into multiple small pulses (pulse in pulse). This prevents the buildup of energy and heat in the tissue thereby preventing adverse effects.

The entire procedure lasts for 5-10 minutes. The patient is made comfortable in the lying down position. A cooling gel is applied to the area that is to be lased and the IPL energy is given with the help of a probe that is self cooled to sub zero temperature. There is minimal discomfort ( less than snapping of a rubber band) during the procedure.

Post procedure Ice packs are given to prevent upper skin damage and the patient can immediately carry on with his routine work.

Is there any post procedure care required after IPL?

Strict Sun protection is the only care that is required post procedure for the patient.

What benefits can be seen post IPL?

Immediate benefits are reduction in size of acne lesion and reduction of swelling. IPL also helps in reduction of redness in susceptible individuals and helps in rejuvenation of skin.
