Open Pore Reduction

What is an ‘Open Pore’?

Open pores are the swollen ends of the hair follicle unit that open on the skin surface.

A hair follicle unit consists of a small oil producing gland (sebaceous gland) on its side which secretes the oil ( sebum). This oil not only keeps the skin shiny and soft but also acts to destroy the harmful bacteria on the skin surface.

Sometimes these tubes get blocked due to the accumulation of dead cells and the oil secreted cannot reach the surface. This leads to increase in size of the gland and thereby the ends of the tubes on the skin surface seen as pores

What causes open pores?

The primary causes of open pores are faster ageing of skin due to exposure to sun ( photoageing) & Increased secretion of sebum. It is seen more commonly in men than in women.

What are the treatment modalities of open pores?

Treatment of open pores focuses on decreasing oil secretion from sebaceous glands and increasing exfoliation of the dead skin.

Using salicylic acid and glycolic acid face washes helps in exfoliation of the dead skin This allows the trapped oil to be relaeased thereby reducing the size of glands and the pores

At times the face washes alone may not help in unclogging the pores. In such cases Microdermabrasion helps in achieving this effect

What is microdermabrasion

Microderabrasion , also called as Skin polishing, is a simple and safe office procedure that helps in abrading the superficial skin layer ( stratum corneum).

This superficial abrasion is done with the help of aluminum oxide crystals or other abrasive substances that are blown onto the skin surface and then vacuumed off, using a single handpiece.

How does microdermabrasion work?

Once the stratum corneum is abraded, the skin's surface is improved. The healing process brings with it newer skin cells that look and feel smoother. Some of the skin's visible fine lines, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and to some extent, pigmentation due to tanning are removed.

This also helps in unclogging the follicular opening thereby reducing the size of pores.

Also, without the stratum corneum acting as a barrier, medicinal creams and lotions are more effective because more of their active ingredients and moisture can find their way down to the lower layers of skin

Are there any other methods of treating open pores?
In resistant cases fractional Carbon dioxide laser can be used to clear the open pores.
What is fractional Carbon dioxide laser?

Fractional CO2 Laser is currently the gold standard to treat acne, pigmentation, scars (post acne and traumatic), open pores, dull texture & complexion, stretch marks and photo aged skin; for both the face and body. It is also very popular for face, neck, and hand rejuvenation.

How does fractional Carbon dioxide laser work?

Fractional Laser is the latest in skincare technology. Conventional Lasers target the whole area that is lased. Fractional Laser, on the other hand, uses numerous microscopic Laser beams, which create tiny Laser "punctures" (each of about 0.05 mm in diameter) into the skin while leaving the untreated surrounding areas intact. The untreated tissue helps to accelerate the healing process and rejuvenate the skin by promoting microcirculation and new cell genesis. In cases of open pores, this works by inducing new collagen to grow around the follicular units thereby allowing the skin around it to be tighter and firmer. This reduces the pore size.
